A few days before taking off for Minneapolis I had the pleasure of hosting my friend Nicolle (Nikki) for a few days in my adopted city of Puerto Vallarta.  I have known Nikki for about four years, but we worked together at Walden University.  We got to know each other at Academic Residencies. Along with a group of other 40+ women from Walden, we had regular high-level meetings (Happy Hours) to discuss our concerns.  We called ourselves MWOW or Mature Women of Walden.

Nikki is no stranger to Mexico.  She lived in Guanajuato for 15 years while raising a family and working as an English teacher.  Oh, and, of course, she is fluent in Spanish.

Even though she did vacation in Puerto Vallarta when her kids were little, her boys are now young men, so it had been awhile since was here, and I wanted to make sure we packed as much as possible into the three days before we headed north.

We hit a variety of my favorite restaurants; Bohemios’s, Joe Jack’s, Coco’s Kitchen, Pancho’s Takos, The Sea Monkey for “beverages,” Page in the Sun for coffee, Lix for ice cream and Daiquiri Dick’s for flaming Mexican coffee.  I will let Nikki give you her impressions of the various venues, but my take was that she thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Besides eating and drinking we did walk the Malecon, shop for Mexican treasures, and best of all, we went whale watching!

We love the humpbacks

Nikki had never been whale watching, so it was really fun to take her, and as some of you know, I have been, I don’t know about 15 times, but I would go once a week if I could.  We had some technical difficulties getting our tickets at the Marina, but it all turned out in the end.  We had perfect weather, free tropical drinks and food, and best of all, lots of whales!  All this for $24 each!

In case you are wondering where Judd was during all this fun, he did join us at Bohemio’s but then took off early for the Twin Cities to attend to family matters.  Nikki has graciously agreed to be our guest blogger for this post.  Thank you so much, Nikki!

Having the company and the help with Spanish was terrific.  And, we even got to sit together on the plane to Minneapolis!

A 3-day Escape to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

My 3-day escape to visit my dear friend, Marcia Gage, could not have come at a better time as Minneapolis temperatures plummeted to negative numbers just when my Sun Country plane left the runway.

It was great to spend some quality girlfriend time with Marcia and get a feel for her “PV” way of life.

She was an excellent hostess and provided a nice balance of sightseeing, relaxing, and good eats.  The highlight for sightseeing was definitely our whale watching excursion.

The whale watching boat excursion lasted a good 3 hours out on the Banderas Bay and included snacks, sandwiches, and alcoholic beverages.  While “guaranteed” whale sightings themselves were not included in the trip, we actually did get several opportunities to see the whales swimming in the wild.

Joe Jack’s received my 5-star rating for their mojito; Daiquiri Dick’s  for their fiery dessert drink show on the beach; El Bohemio’s.

A trip to Mexico is never complete without a few surprises….

  1. The 19.30 peso/dollar exchange rate, which pretty much allowed me to eat and drink for free;
  2. A local attempting to earn money by blowing fire from his mouth as gringo tourists went running in the other direction.  What????
  3. Judd ordering gringo comfort food (meatloaf) from one of their favorite neighborhood restaurants. (El Bohemio’s Cafe.)

Cheers to a fun filled PV adventure!  I’m definitely looking forward to my next one.
